- Hi I'm William, and I'm an addict of computers...In Introduce Yourself·6 November 2023Hi, I'm William Lightning, I'm from Portland, Oregon, United States. I work for Fuel Medical Group as a Systems Architect. I wear a variety of hats, and as such I lean on DevOps practices conitually to minimize the toil required for any System Administration or other systems task. I lead a team of programmers who impliment medical software. My personal ethos has been that many of the worlds problems can be solved through software. While as I have grown older, I have realized there are limitations, I still see so much limitations in the world that can be overcome by just better recording, organization and output of information. I enjoy working on hard and strage problems, and coming up with solutions that others can use. There is no reason anyone should ever get stuck just doing data entry to process claims or copying orders from paper to a computer, your time can be used so much more valuably! I have a host of sayings I love to use: • "Take care of yourself. Your peak productivity doesn't happen when you're sick and still working away." - I often find people in our field work through every sickness and rarely give their body the rest it needs. I remind coworkers we're here for each other, and if it a true emergency, we'll reach out. There is time for R&R (rest & recovery) • "Your lack of planning does not consitute my emergency" - I can't count the number of times in my career that I've had a coworker or supervisor say "it needs to be done yesterday!" when I just heard about the task or feature request now. Good improvement work is rarely done in a "all fire" rush. There is a time and place for it in a "true emergency" (someone could die, production is down, etc). This also counts looping in the right people early, if things are looking bad, don't be afraid to reach for help, especailly once you've identified what help you need. Everyone has the same goal in almost every company, we want our projects, coworkers and friends to succeed! • "PHD - Push here dummy" - This was given to me by a supervisor early in my career. The best solution should be a "PHD" in simplicity. You should never have to work hard to solve a simple problem. Configurability is nice, but without the defaults all being sufficient 99% of the time, you're just adding unneeded complexity (and making it error prone) to a process! In my off time, I enjoy spending time with my family (both immediate and extended). The best weekends are the ones I have my nieces and nephews over. Nothing resets a week better than being tackled by a bunch of kids! With what little time is left after that I enjoy a good pencil, paper and dice RPG. The more tech in the world, the better, but I also enjoy a good fantasy RPG as well. It's a great way to sit around (without computers!) and have fun with friends. I love a good hearty meal, bring on the meats! I grew up with a Vegan mother, who never prevented me from eating meat, but refused to cook it. I'm pretty sure I ate more turkey on thanksgiving that anyone else I knew. I would go to my friends homes, and talk about "tofurkey"... it wouldn't take but a few minutes for their parents to have a heaping plate in front of me. Sooo delicious! Really appreciate David for putting this community together. I look forward to interacting with people here.3014
